RE: how exactly do you build a 302 into a 306?
see thats one of my issues. (not trying to highjack)
the guy i got the car from, was a very old man, very cool, and down to earth, collects cars basically to look at them.
and he told me that the engine was freshly "rebuilt" so does that mean its a 306 now? or is it possible to keep it a 302.
and most likly ill have to disassemble the hole engine to figure out what it really is right?
(i trust the guy that it was re-built, but it was hard to get any info out of him, as he was about 78yrs old, and repeated himself alot)

yea its possible to say its rebuilt and still be a 302, he could have done a h/c/i swap, which i gusse means its rebuilt.

my block's bored 30 over... you will need machine work line hone, bore, you might as well deck the block if you have it there... it really doesn't make that big a difference i suggest considering forged pistons if your pulling it apart

why pull it apart guys??? if it runs fine leave it alone!!1 if it ain't broke don't fix it!!! take it to the track,,,, the 1/4 time and mph will indicate how stock it is!!! = done end of discussion

If you want to know what has been done, pull a head off. If pistons tops are pretty dirty and do not have a .030 on them it is a 302 still. Lots of people claim their car has a fresh 302 in it, probably half of them actually do. I picked up a 302 awhile ago for nothing, it was just a stock 1989 mustang motor, tore it apart, cylinder bores were still nice, just needed a light hone and I rebuilt it completely. It is still a 302 and a very nice motor sitting in my garage, it is for sale to but thats another story. As far as boring a block I'm conservative. SBFs I will go .030 over, thats it, no more. If needed I'll go get another block, they are cheap.

A 302 is the stock stroke (3.0") and stock rods (5.090"), but the bore is bored, then finished honed .030".
This increases the cubes by roughly 4 cubic inches.
It increases compression slightly, and unshrouds the valve slightly. It is an opportunity to throw in larger valve reliefs and a slightly larger piston.
Stroking is where the power is at.
