Default 75/25 antifreeze mix?

After reading Mustang Performance Handbook by William R Mathis he states that the optimum efficiency for your antifreeze mix is at a 75/25 ratio. Now I've always heard 50/50 and 60/40 but never something this high so since I'm by no means an expert I thought I'd see what other people think.

75% antifreeze? [&:] That seems like too much.

+1 from what I understand water is a better coolant than antifreeze, the antifreeze is just there to prevent corrosion and obviously freezing in winter.

I have the same book. He was talking about for cooling efficiency in race conditions, not for everyday driver status in freezing weather.

More water is better for cooling, as mentioned the antifreeze helps prevent corrosion and freezing of the coolant. Many guys who run open track don'tor aren't allowed to run glycol-based coolant so they usually run straight distilled water and usually an addititve such as water wetter.

You're 100% right. Water is by far one of the best coolants you can get. My cousin recently moved to AZ and he said people out there run aluminum rads and all aluminum parts on their car and run straight water. If you nave all aluminum block and heads and all parts of the cooling system are aluminum then you can run water and not worry about corrosion. My friend used to flush his cooling system in his nova and run water when he was going to the track, when he got home he would just drain half of it and fill it with un-mixed anti freeze, it was good for shaving a consistant .13 to .17 off his ETs.

50/50 is the reccommended street set up or a 60/40 and the antifreeze is there to lubricate the pump and seals...often times when performing flushes on many diff vehicles the pump would temp lock up when it got a all water mix...I don't reccommend running straight water as it'll cause corrossion quick in the cast iron block and you'll get rusty coolant

That is flat out bad advice... Aluminum LOVES to oxidize... So, unless you have an internally annodized cooling system, you're going to destroy it running straight water 100% of the time. At the track for short periods of time, water is just fine.

Okay well I'll stick with the 50/50 then. I've heard of the water wetter additive and I think I'll look into getting some unless its ridiculously expensive. Thanks for all the info[sm=thanx.gif]

Ohguess I forgot to add that I didn't mean you should run 100% water all the time. If you live in a fairly warm area I highly doubt that a 75/25 mix will harm anything though. If you want you can stick with 60/40 to be safe. Running 50/50 is really morefor winter time in cold climates as it will not cool the car as well as 60/40 or more would.
