RE: oil pump shaft
the shaft goes in first from the bottom and the retainer ring must be set to the proper position then oil pump is bolted in.....reason for retainer ring is to keep shaft in place so it does not pull out when removing dizzy and fall into the pan...then you will have to remove pan either way

RE: oil pump shaft
Put an ARP/Melling hardened pump shaft in if it doesn't have one already. Sucks to have it twist and break if it's a crapola stock one with that crap pot metal or whatever they made it with.

RE: oil pump shaft
I guess i'm one of the first people that do it or the first one to admit it...
I'd have one pull out even with the ring (clip) installed properly before. Since then I have epoxied the shaft to the distributer and I never have to worry about it. The only draw back was I had to by a cheap replacement shaft to prime the motor with. I have pulled my distributer out about 3 different times since I built the motor last for intake swaps, cam swaps etc and haven't had a problem.
