motor swap? easy or just hell?
i have my 94 gt that i jsut bought with a motor that shot out the next day, i am looking for another 5.0, this mechanic who usally fixes my car says it will be 1000$ to swap out my old motor and drop in a diff 5.0 out of a t-bird or another mustang that will pop right in...
Now is there anyone who has done a 5.0 swap? is it easy? any special tools needed? i really need to do someitng major myself to save me $$$ in labor...can i tackle it myself? i dont have a ton of experiance but i know what is what... im thinking about just taking the motor out myself, and letting him put the new one back in..hopefully that will save me 3-600 bucks...let me know

RE: motor swap? easy or just hell?
it shouldent be to hard. if you have plenty of time, and another vehicle to use, id say do it yourself.
but if its your only car, you might want to pull the engine yourself, have a buddy tow you to the shop, then let him put it in.
an experenced person can pull, and drop in the engein in a day........as long as theres no unseen circumstances

RE: motor swap? easy or just hell?
i pulled my motor with tranny in two hours by my self and it actually wasnt to bad....the reason i had hell is because the longtube headers where still on the exhaust but other than that it was pretty easy

Do it yourself. Good learning experience and it's not hard, just time consuming.
I pulled my motor and trans out by myself in about 4 hours over winter break.

If you haven't ever tackled something like this, take a few pictures with your digital camera. If you can't quite figure everything out, it gives you something to look back on. It's not bad at all, we have pulled a ton of engines and transmissions at our shop and one of the toughest was a 4.3 4WD Blazer. The clearance for the bellhousing bolts were hell. We figured out the easiest way is to do it is to drop the transmission cross member and let the tranny hang down to get those "sometimes" tough bellhousing bolts. Now we just pull the transmission in a RWD vehical first. That also makes installing the engine easier. It's much easier to line up the input shaft or the convertor with the engine in. Just my 2 cents, it has probably shaved 2 hours off of our R & Ring engines.
