Default t5 problems

well my friends 87 5.0 had issues. the stock t5 didnt have 5th most of the time, yet sometimes it had it. then one day every gear other than 4th went out. So he bought a used one from a junkyard out of an 83 stanger(r they the same?) well while on the lift all gears worked fine, but on the road 3rd and 4th didnt work. so we went back, lifted up the car and 3rd and 4th worked. what would cause this? He's prolly just going to end up getting the original tranny rebuilt. he has no major performance ideas so a rebuilt stocker will do just fine. any ideas on how much this would cost if we have to go this route? thanks for all your guys' imput.

if you have to pay a shop to rebuild it then best off buy one already done or a new z-spec one. cause when they are done..cost will be close to that of a new one pending what they find......when you say gears went out??? what do you mean?? won't go into gear???

the syncrho assembly.

A synchro workes by slow down the main shaft and speeding up the mating gear simultaneously, and instantly. It does this with the just of a blocker ring with fricton material on the bottom of to create resistance on the main shaft. So, even if the teeth in your syncro aren't bad, allowing the 3-4 shift to happen while still, your blocker right could be toast, not doing its job, and thus not allowing you to go into gear with load, while moving down the road..

So, the point of all that is. you need new 3-4 syncrho assy.

Easiest way to fill em...if you have the shifter out. I pull the fill plug on the side of the tranny(top one), and start pouring it in where the shifter goes untill it starts comming out of the fill hole.
