Default help please asap

ok so the gm sylte dizzy in my car crapped out a few days ago and was producing no spark, we replaced the coil and all, it left me stranded from 8am to about 7pm. so today me and my dad put in a old ford dizzy, we bought a new msd cap etc. am i retarding or advancing the timing when turning the dizzy clockwise? when i turn it all the way clockwise it cranks for a few seconds, then shuts off, if i turn it the other way it doesnt even try, ive pulled dizzy a few times trying to maybe get it on a different tooth on dizzy, if im right then the firing order is 15426378? going in a counter clockwise direction, i need help people, also carbeurator is backfiring if it has anything to do with it. so any ideas on my problem? im pretty sure i got my plugs on right i checked for compression when my dad was turning over the engine on the number 1 plug, so im pretty sure, weve been in garage all day trying to get this thing running, any help would be appreciated

thanks

you need to correctly stab the dizzy #1 needs to be at tdc and pointer on 0 and stab it so rotor points to #1 on the cap and if you are carbed and are using a duraspark dizzy then you need the appropriate coil and duraspark ignition box...don't know if you have all that cause it's not stated

Are you positive you're stabbing the dist. correctly? You can't just bump it over till you feel compression, that's close but you have to make sure it's on TDC. Just slow down and double check your work. You said you've pulled it a few times trying different teeth, don't just guess, make sure it's right the first time.
