Pushrod length comes to mind.

Improper rocker geometry, excess valve train noise, excess wear. They don't always need shims, but you have to verify the roller pattern on the valve stem to see if/where the shimms are needed.

+1 I don't run any shims with mine, buy the correct pushrod length and you're good to go.

i've got a loss of power from start til about 3 grand and it goes away if i advance timing to like 30* something is screwed up and i have no idea what it is so i'm just trying to go over the things i wasn't sure about when i was putting this motor together i didn'tput the shims in cuz i was missing two of them but i didn't know if it would cause any problems

Lack of shims will not cause this much IMO. I would start to look at the cam and or distributor. What cam, how was it installed (retarded, dot-to-dot, advanced), and was it degreed? What kind of distributor (TFI)? Are you sure its stabbed properly.
