Default Problem with my voltage

I am having problems with my voltage in my 84. I just put In a new red top battery and a new O.M. alternator, and for some reason my alternator has fried my battery. I put a volt meter to my post with the car running at idle and it says 13.5-14.0 volts i rev it up to 2,000 RPMs and the post read 16.4-17.0 volts. what have i done wrong or did i just get faulty parts?

not positive if that model year alternator has the built-in (internal) voltage regulator or not. if it don't, then the voltage regulator sounds like it's bad to me.

^^^^ agreed. If your voltage is that high then your VR could be bad. It should read 13.7-14.8 at the highest. You may want to double check your cables too and make sure they are in good condition.

well You all were right it is the Voltage Regulator, But it is all good becuase advance auto said that the person that sold me my alternator should have suggested that i buy a VR with it and so i get a new battery and a VR for free sounds good to me. thanks again guys

they accually gave me a new battery, voltage regulator, new battery cables, and they refunded my money that i spent buying an alternator. so i am pretty happy. ohh yeah the reason that it messed up in the first place is that with those optima batteries they are universal so they have side post for the GM's and the dumb *** put them nest to my fender and it shorted it out so bad that it melted the gel substince inside the battery.
