Default Speedometer problem

The speedometer cable in my 85 GT is going out and I cannot find a replacement for that year. They all start at 87. I was thinking I may have to install a gauge from an 87 and then use an 87 cable to make this work. Does any one know if the 87 and later speedometer will fit in the 85 dash and will the 87 cable fit the 85 T5 trans? Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Found one at Autozone.com for 14.99, just get the right one instead of changing everything.

Did you find one at Auto Zone for an 85?

Yeah, just put in your cars info and all parts will be for it. Then search speedometer.

Thanks, I didn't mention that I got a cable from 5.0 resto and it was some generic brand. Didn't fit right. The cable from Autozone is called a Pioneer, I also check NAPA and they have some off brand. Guess I'll keep trying them until one works.

The one that I ordered from Auto Zone, when my speedometer cable went out, was just a repair kit. It included the cable that goes in the housing, and a new male attachment for the speedometer end. So I took it back and just ordered the one from 5.0resto.com

i needed a new housing and cable for mine. the autoparts stores only have the inside cable, not the housing. i ordered the one from 50resto. its a little long, but it was the housing and cable. if you got a local junkyard you may be able to pull one from there and just get a new inside cable from autozone.

on a side note with all the work i done trying to get my speedometer working it still isnt. not only was my housing burned in two, but the part inside the tranny that turns the speedo gear is missing or something. i got the gear that goes on the end of the cable, theres just nothing inside the tranny to move it.

There's 2 available at AZone. One is a kit and one is the right one. I got one for my 71 and it was either the "do your own" kit, or one that was complete.(I know its not for that year, but I searched for this guy and found the same 2 cables) I got the complete one and it was fine. (Well the second one I got was fine. The first one I thought didnt match to the speedo right because it kept working off and on until it stopped all together. Turns out a tie slipped and the cable fell against the exhaust on the pass side!)
