Default question about rev-limiters

i remember reading something about a 2 stage rev limiter awhile back and was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction or answer a couple things. i dont think a 2 stage would be what im looking for, but dont know if there is another way to get what im wanting. i have an msd 6al which has a built in limiter, but is it possible to get another limiter that can be turned on and off as needed? and that wont harm my msd?

main reason for a 2 step is for like burnouts while the engine is "free wheeling" you don't over rev it.. and spin a rod bearing.. I use a crane 2 step

pretty much for what vfast said they are for. i was wanting to get a msd 6a and use a separate rev limiter and have it mounted close to driver seat so it could be changed easily. that way i could have been able to do a burnout without having to worry about over-reving it, then flip a switch or whatever real quick and be back to normal. i somehow ended up ordering a 6al instead. just like everything else im doing to the car, its not needed, but something wanted.

I would never bother with a 6A, I always use the 6AL. What want is what Vfast said, a Two Step. There are ones made by MSD and will plug right into your 6AL and allow you to set two different rev limits, with pre-set plug in "pills".

how does that work?
how does it know which one to use, or is there a switch or something?

Yes you need to wire a switch, so that on the burn out it will use the lower rpm limiter. Cars with a trans brake will wire it so when the trans brake button is held the lower rpm limit holds the rpms at the best rpm for the launch.

you can go to www.msdignition.com and they have wiring diagrams and instructions on how to install a two step rev limiter.
