Default horsepower ratings for stock block??

well im going to order my n20 kit setup for at least a 250 shot (adjustble to 500hp) . my motor currently will not handle tht obviously cause i dont have the proper internals but someone told me the stock block itself can only handle up to 500hp. my plans where to pull the motor and buy a 347 rotating assembly from jegs put a simple cam and head setup (nothing crazy) and make maybe 400hp on just motor then have the 250 shot on back. but my buddy told me the stock block can only handle 500hp?? im new to 5.0s i have had several cars from a twin turbo cobra to sprayed ls1s but im completely new to 5.0s so any help is greatly appreciated. If this fact is true about the 500hp rating then could somone link me to a good motor builder for fords, where i could purchase a shortblock? Thanks Gregg

yeah 500 itself is pushing it, they like to split the lifter valley. I would get an aftermarket block

500 is listed as the limit of a stock 5.0 block because many people have had up to 500 reliably. Some have had 600, but the majority has determined that if you want more than 500 go with an aftermarket block. You can order an FRPP "Boss" 302 block ($1799 from Ford) which is good for what you are wanting, or spend the money on a Dart sportsman block, which many have had in the 800+hp range with no problems. If you are looking for doing this on the cheap, you are out of luck. Over 500hp and you are going to have to be willing to invest some serious cash into this.

Welcome to the 5.0 man. It's a very stout engine in stock form, and has a plethora of aftermarket support for it (something LS1's have only started to enjoy in recent years). Putting one up to 500hp may seem small compared to an LS1 or new cobra, which can make 700+ with a twin turbo and small upgrades, but the 5.0 stangs are signifigantly lighter than any LS1 car you have ever had.

550 ish at the crank below 6500-6800 rpm is my safe limit on junk I build, but its not a sure thing by any means.

ya i had never driven nor driven in a 5.0 before and i got behind my buddies when i bought it and all it has done is a rebuilt motor, with a cam, full ignition,3.73s, full suspension, bbk longtubes, intake, the normal stuff and i was impressed as hell, like i said i dont want to go to crazy nor do i have a timeslip goal for this car but i would love to hit 10.s with the 250shot. but i have realized you dont need the power tht the newer cars are pushing because of the size and weight difference.
