Default E / Park brake light stays on.

While driving today the e brake light on the dash came on and will not turn off unless I turn the car off.Just got the car back from the shop too. Had clutch adjusted.

Also had the breaks done about a month ago.

Any Suggestions for a fix?

thanks.

check the switch mounted on the e-brake handle. but check your fluid level first off, there's a switch in the master cyl that will make the light come on once the fluid gets so low

If your fluid is fine, unplug your ebrake harness from its sensor and see if it stays on. If it does then your proportioning blockseems to be the culprit. I'm not an expert on brake systems but that seems like the logic to me and thats how I trouble shoot brake light problems on the vehicles I work on.

check your fluid level
This is the most probable cause. I have had the same problem before, always checks out to be the fluid level being just a little low.

I forgot to mention that sometimes the light does NOT come on either when the parking brake is engaged.

Where is the harness and sensor located?...under the center console?

BTW i have a 1990 GT

thanks

Mine is under the console. I don't remember if it ran under the carpet or along the inside of the console but its in there. The sensor for the ebrake is on the ebrake on the bottom. Is your fluid level ok???

Sorry I've been away for a while.

Hard to check the fluid level as I can't see through the tank (not sure if it's yellowed over or supposed to look like that...im guessing it's not supposed to look like that)

It should be full since I just had ALL brakes redone, but could be a leak? Don't see any drops anywhere though. maybe the shop didn't fill it all the way??? but that wouldn't make sense since it was fine for weeks until right after the clutch quadrant was replaced.

Anyhow...Looking into it with the cap off i can't see any fluid, but there is no clear sight down into it since there is this strainer/plug looking type thing obstructing my view just under the bottleneck.

thoughts??

The containers are pretty yellow on these old cars. Just look really hard for a change in darkness you should find the level if you look hard enough.

Open the cap and push down on the strainer with your finger. It floats if memory serves me correctly, it might not though. I have the old metal resevoir so I am not completly sure. But Like ryan said ^ fill it a little and see if there is a color change. You may try shining a flashlight down into the resevoir to see if you can make out a line on the outside where the fluid is then.
