Default timing with no pointer

my engine for some reason is lacking the pointer for Timing, I have the marks on the balancer, but nothing to refferance to. what can I do to set the timing on my car? my set up is:

Edelbrock 600
edelbrock Torker II intake
MSD Dist and ingnition
Blaster2 coil W/8.5 wires

with this set up what should my timing be? I set it at TDC, and the car runs, but not very well

So how are your missing the pointer? All it is...is a piece of metal that you line up the marks with. You use the edge of the metal.

So you are saying you are missing the metal all together or is it broken? Also if you are missing it a junkyard would be the best but bring you a pulley puller and some tools. I am not sure but I think you have to take the pulley off to get to it. Maybe I'm wrong and it is just bolted to the side.

You don't want you car to run at TDC. That is too far retarted and the car will run horrible. Factory is 10 degrees advanced.

You can turn until ping but if not all the aspects are right, you wont get it to ping.

If you do proceed to advance until ping I would suggest you drive your car until normal temp then drive hard for a few minutes to heat up the engine more. Then time it by advancing because predetination is more common in a warm to hot engine. This will give you a more accurate judgement. Or you will have to adjust the timing more than once.

yeah, am saying that the block is missing the whole pointer. between the past owner and me, some how the pointer came up missing is it possible to take something and mark the block and then use a timing light to set timing using the degree marks on the balancer?

Yes....just grab anothe person with a 5.0 and start measuring and mark that point on your block behind the crank....that should work.
