Angry timings confusing need help

ok so iv been trying to get my motor i just installed going the right way, im trying to set my timing with the ford racing damper that came with the motor.its the first time iv done this and iv read and looked on the web on the correct way to set base timing, when i bring the #1 cycl. up to tdc the timing marks between the two degree meters on the damper so iv taken them both to 0* marks on the damper and set my distributor and all and it wouldnt fire over all i got was backfire with one and then backfire threw the intake with the other, so i redue everything and bring my #1 back to tdc leave it halfway between the * meters and restap the distributor and all and it fires up. could my damper be installed wrong or the timing chain jumped a tooth or what. i just can figure it out, srry yall this ones long

You need to know if your TDC on the intake or exhaust stroke. It makes a big difference. Like mjr46 said, it was probably 180 degrees out.

i always use my finger. plug the hole with the tip of your finger (dont stick your finger IN it). have a buddy slowly turn the engine from the crank. should eventually start feeling the air blow out. the moment the air STOPS is top dead center.
