Ford AOD Question. Please help.
I just bought my third mustang and i have a question about the automatic tranny. The car is a 1991 coupe 5.0, aod. The tranny has been rebuilt and it has a shift kit. The rear end gear is a 4.10. The trans works perfect but seems to go through the gears a little too quick, especially 2-3. When i drop the shifter down to 1st on wide open throttle, i can drag it as long as i want, the when i go to D it goes through second a little too quick, third is perfect, and overdrive is perfect. What can i do to make it go through the gears properly? Do i simply need to adjust the TV cable (wich i doubt, plus i dont want to burn the tranny), or do i need to change the governer on the tranny? Will an aftermarket shifter go through each gear individualy 1-2-3-4 as opposed to the stock shifter 1-(2,3)-4? Please help. this thing is driving me crazy. Thank you in advance.

AOD, 4.10 gear. hahahahahahahahahahaha, go ahead and kiss 1st gear goodbye, and possibly 2nd. you'll be driving around town in reverse. it happened to mine. i had to rebuild it, all caused by the shuffle game. anyway i tried to rev up the engine while in drive to see if it would catch 3rd gear, and that wont work either. a stock tranny and a low gear dont work well if you hot rod it around alot.

Mustangmike33 is correct, the shuffle will eventually kill your AOD. Your options are limited. Do you know what kit is in the tranny?. Some of the better aftermarket kits are adjustable like the Baumann kit. It allows you to custom tailor the shift points by using shims behind the the valve body pistons. There is also an easy valve body upgrade you can perform using JB Weld, or any other form of epoxy. This is known as the epoxy mod and allows you to hold 1st gear as long as you want, shift and hold 2nd gear as long as you want, and 3rd gear until you slightly let off the throttle, then it shifts to OD. The TV cable setting is critical to the life of the tranny. You can adjust the pressure up, without worrying too much about damage, but too little pressure, and you can burn it up literally in minutes/miles. Raising the pressure a little is safe, and will raise the shift points in all gears. Correct TV pressure should be set with a pressure guage (I use an oil pressure guage), and is normally set around 0 - 5psi at idle. The important thing is the pressure should increase with the slightest movement of the throttle. I don't know if this will help your problem, but it may keep you from making a wrong adjustment.

ok guys, my tranny is built. all new gears, lentech valve body, and a 2800 stahl. so what my tranny is doing is while its cold i have to drive in first gear until it warms up to shift into second. which really sucks cause ive got a 4.10 gear as well. but once it does shift, if im manually doing it, it seems to jump between 1st, 2nd, and nuetral. since i have a electric od switch, 3rd gear is fine and od is fine. if i put the shifter in drive and let it shift itself, i have to rev the car high and then it shifts straight into 3rd. can this be the tv cable or is my tranny severly screwed? or Both? remember, i do have a 75mm throttle body also. besides the tranny was built alittle over a year ago. so whats the deal?

Alright, the tranny is shot now. First gear goes in when it feels like it and overdrive is slipping. I need to rebuild it and i do not want to take any shortcuts. The car is a daily driver with 410 gears and has roughly 375 hp. What do you guys recommend. I just need a bulletproof tranny. What do i do?

PA (Performance Automatic) C4. cant go wrong and cant bust em'. i had my tranny rebuilt, and about after a year and a month, i busted the sprag in it, and it did the same thing yours did. 1st wouldnt work but every now and then, and od didnt at all. so i had it rebuilt again. if you go with a rebuild, the basic rebuild of an AOD at a tranny shop where im from runs around 500-600 dollars. but then you need a stahl and a valve body. PA makes a good body and so does Lentech, i used Lentech, it shifts so hard, you wouldnt believe it. all in all, i have about 2000.00 in the complete rebuild with the body and converter. almost as cheap and putting a stick in it!!!
