Default bought 5.0 stock and its pinging

so on monday my girlfriend bought a 95 convertible 5.0 stock with k & n air filter. my question is, is that normal for a stock 5.0 to be pinging under heavy throttle? its a auto with 79 thousand miles. ifs its not normal what can we do to fix it?

thanks jared

Need to check the engine timing, 10 deg. is stock....OR try some super unleaded ...but sure sounds like that's the problem....

Is the egr valve on it and functioning? It should easily be able to run on 87 octane depending where you live and the quality of the gas.

could have carbon build up also in the cumbustion chambers and or on top of the pistons , elevating cumbustion chamber temps that contributes to detonation, a good seafoam or induction clean should cure the issue

The 94-95 tune combined with the stock iron heads is not the best combination. When my car was stock it pinged like crazy. I had to run 93 octane and once in a while octane booster. Swapping over to aluminum heads fixed the problem.

Personally, with every vehicle I buy used, I give it a good tune up. I check over all the wiring and ensure all my sensors are operating properly. A plugged fuel filter can cause lean pinging. You have no idea how the previous owner maintained, or not, maintained it. Just my .02

we did the carbon flush on wednesday and it helped a little but i guess we need to do the fuel filter change and maybe run higher then 89 octane and go to 91 since thats all i got here in cali and maybe try the octane booster aswell. i guess all i can do is trial and error. you dont think it can be the fuel regulator? my 02 gt was pinging alot and all my mods and i had to increase the air/fuel ratio in my tuner to stop. running my 02 with 6% rich for the top end. so i thought that that could be the problem. please just give me opinions thank you.
