Default Backfire...

Alright, I have another new problem. I've been hearing a sound when my GT is cold, but had not been able to identify it because my music was too loud, but tonight, it was an unmistakable LOUD backfire. Not the first time it's happened, just the first time I heard it plainly. I had mentioned that my car is hesitant when it's cold, could this maybe be an EGR problem? I had an h-pipe put in not long ago, I don't recall the backfires before that, but am not sure. Any ideas would be appriciated.

Could be a number of things. If EGR is bad, its usually related to higher idle, or studder or check engine light. Sometimes just the EGR tube is bad. Also could be the TPS depending upon if the car is older or not. My TPS is bad, and that is what is causing the backfire, because the computer then is putting too much gas into the engine causing the unburnt gas to burn up in the exhaust making the popping noises you hear. Normally there is some backfires naturally over time but they arecovered up by catalytic converters, which I don't have, so you hear more of it.I'm removing my TB this week and cleaning it all out, replacing TPS and gaskets of course, and may even takeintake manifold off and get all that gunk out too. </P>

My car is a 95, and has about 110K on it. How much did your TPS run?

I havnt gotten it yet, the funny thing is that there are like 6 different kinds that they put on 94-95, and maybe more, based on transmission and other things. So you need to get yours off to look at the number before you buy one. They run about 60$ or so I believe,.

tps problems usually cause a looping idle but it can cause backfiring too, just not likely

OK Vfast, youre right we did cover o2, but I didn't notice at that time that it was backfiring. Also, I pulled one o2 sensor out and cleaned it, it made no difference. Is there another on the other tube? Also, a parts store tried to tell me I have o2 sensors before and after the cats, but in my chiltons, it says there's only one before, except on the 3.8 and 4.6. I have the 5.0.
