Default Identify my motor...

I just picked up an 82 GT with what I'm being told is a 92 motor and driveline. I checked the rearend tag and it is an 8.8 with 3:73's, has a T-5, and an EFI 5.0. I'm aware that these did not come in a 1982 GT, so I some identifing to do. The top of the EFI unit says "5.0L Cobra" in black and red. I am having a hard time confirming if this is a 1992 or newer motor. Some websites seem to indicate that it is a 1992 302 but others are not very specific. Any ideas?

its either a '93 cobra motor or just a cobra intake manifold on an efi (86-93) 5.0. so it should be a roller motor which is good.

does it have maf? if so then it is an 89+ which would be even better, and they did the swap right that way haha.

take off the starter and look at the numbers on the block then cross reference them and it should tell you what year block it is.

Hey thanks for the info, I will check the casting on the block here in a few days, although I read that this intake would indicate that it is a 1993 cobra motor. Of course, like was already stated, it could be just the EFI on an older motor. As far as the MAF is concerned, it doesn't have one but there are about 4 empty plugs on the wiring harness, in the engine bay, right in the area where the MAF would have been. I thought it was strange that there was no MAF but the car has a KN cold air intake as well as BBK shortys with an X-pipe and 2.5 inch flowmaster exhaust. So once I get a confirmation on the year of the motor I will be looking to figure out what I have internally and estimate HP as well...
Thanks again.

thats bad.. its a 82 with a might be 91 and newer motor running speed density. Isnt the firing orders different? I thought they changed the firing orders when they switched to mass air.

firing order is the same i think that only switched when the made it a roller motor. i doubt its a cobra motor, prolly just a 5.0, maybe out of a 91, and then someone slapped the intake on it.

I'm def gonna check the casting number on friday. I can tell ya that the runs really well. It comes out of the hole pretty hard (not like my '65 with a 302 crate motor) and doesn't skip, studder, stumble or backfire and the exhaust system sounds great. But I will get to the bottom of this mystery......Also, I cecked a web site on 1993 Cobras and it said that they only came with 3.08 gears, with no other options available. So with my tag saying there are 3.73's (and a rough visual verification) you are most likely correct, it's prob a late 80's/early 90's GT motor with a cobra intake.

OK, I'm at a loss....the casting number doesn't look like anything I have seen in pics on web sites or a couple of books I have. It is pretty large and set up funky as you look at it. This is what it looks like:
23
E7TE
CA
S

right under the starter. Then there is a smaller number "7A11" (which looks like a date code) right on the edge of the block where the starter bolts right into the bell housing. Now if this is in fact a casting number, it looks like it might be from a 1987 truck.....I think i may have just been scammed!
