Default no headlight ?

i have a 88 gt and i had heard the rumor about running the foglights with the headlights for a long period of time will cause the headlights not to work for a short period of time. well, a couple nights ago i relized that it wasnt a rumor when i was driving home at night and my headlights and foglights just went out. i turned the foglight switch off and a few mins later the headlights come back on and the foglights would work again. anyone ever have this problem and do u know why this happens? thanks.
