Flat side out, a little oil on the inside lip of the seal. I like to just a light coat of RTV on the outside of the seal where it meets the block. Ive seen these seals leak arounf the outside. I put the RTV real thin and then drive it in. Make sure you work the seal up easy so the lip doesnt flip and tear. If the crank has a small grove where the old seal was you can buy a sleeve to repair it.

Of course Ford has the tool. As easy as it is to put the seal in it's a waste of money. If you do a bunch of them you can go to Wal-Mart and buy a hard plastic Glass thats the same size as the seal for 1.59 and use it and a plastic hammer to drive it in.

Most of them won't. I have had a few of them that had already been replaced by the owner. They had the bright Idea of driving a screwdiver under the seal and put a nice dig in the outer seal surface. I didn't see it and it leaked. After that they all get a coat of RTV. Very thin but no leaks since
