Default Decent Combo?

Hey guys, I just picked up some Gt40s off a 94 Cobra. I'm looking at puttin some new bearings and rings in my motor now, then put these on, either an e-cam or b-cam, and a gt40 intake. Going to eliminate ac and smog. Shorty headers and O/R hpipe are going on shortly after this build (budgets suck!)

Only thing that I can't decide on is the cam, yes I know custom is the way to go, but I don't have the green for that at this time. Are there better OTS grinds for my combo?

Oh and I will prolly have 1.7 RRs......btw, I have those blue anodized rrs from either comp cams or ford racing and the crane oe 1.7s off of the cobra.....are one of them better than the other? or is there no difference? reason I ask is I have a guy wanting to buy the blue ones I put pics up in my last post, if there are no diff between them and the oe cobra rrs, he can get them

Id be looking at the Comp Cams XE266HR. It's going to offer better overall performance than the E Cam. I'd toss those 1.7 rockers on Ebay and keep the motorsports 1.6 rockers. If the blue rockers are Motorsports rockers they are better than the FRPP(crane) 1.7 energizer rocker.

As far as building on a budget you are just like most of the people out there. Most of us have to stick to a budget but in the end it's all about having fun. I know guys with unlimited budgets and custom everything and get their azz handed to them weekly by some real low buck rides.

If you really want to come out good on the cheap look at the Trick Flow stage1 cam. It's like 165 dollars from Summit and I know a lot of guys running them in stock 5.0s that run well. For a guy trying to do a basic build on a really tight budget it's tough to beat. sometimes the builds you do where you are really tight on funds turn out to be the most rewarding. Trust me, I've been there.

I entered a compitition back in the mid 90s. It was called 10 seconds for under 10,000 dollars. You had to buy a car, build it and get it into the 10s for under 10,000 dollars. You had to buy every part for the car (no free parts or my buddy sold me a 427 stroker for a buck kind of deal) and cheating would get you disqualified. We built a 75 Chevy Nova with a 383 stroker and a 150 shot that ran 10.80s with some real creative parts selection and knowing where the strength and weakness's were. Chevy High Performance magazine was so impressed with the outcome of the three cars that made it they did a version of their own. While custom parts have their place in cars looking for that last ounce of horsepower you don't have to spend a lot of money to have fun or give up durability. The Trick flow cams are ground by Crane just like the Ford Racing cams are.

thanks for the great reply....I will look into both of those cams....

One thing tho, I don't have much say in the RRs if the blue ones are 1.7s, cuz the Cranes are 1.7s off of the cobra as well....so I'm kinda stuck with them. I'll look for a stamp or part number on the blue andozied ones tho. What cam will perform better with the 1.7s if I have no choice? I had a guy gettin his notch mustang worked at my mechanics house tell me they looked like comp rrs.

another small question, but either of the cams mentioned have a nastier idle than the other? No I'm not going to be a youtube superstar and get a nasty big cam that sounds great but runs like my 83 y/o grandma lol I'd rather have performance but I love the sound of a nice lopin cam
