Default Thermostat?

So this morning i drive my stang to school, i let it set for an hour for class then i come back out to my car to start it and i was gonna idle in for a while. but i start my car and the temp slowly starts going up. it got up to about 230 or 240 before i realize it so i shut it off. after letting it set for about 10 minutes i go to start it and it just cranks, wont turn over. i let it set for about 30 minutes then it starts up and i limp it home, having to stop a couple times to let it cool down so im thinking that the thermostat is messed up. what else could it be? its never done this before btw

thanks in advance for any replys

does it only overheat while is sitting still or when its driving or both?

generally speaking, if it overheats more when sitting still its your fan clutch needs to be replaced, if it overheats while driving its your t-stat.

That was what I was thinking. Also if it overheats while driving it could be a clogged radiator, or a bad water pump.

spin it by hand. see if its tough to turn or doesnt spin very freely.

i'd replace your fan clutch(or now would be a good time to go electric fan) flush out your cooling system and add new coolant.
