Default electrical problem?

forgive me if I don't do a good job of explaining this, but was hoping someone could point me in a direction that might help me find the problem I'm noticing. I've got a 92 mustang LX 5.0L and having an issue with the headlights. Normally, the lights have always worked the same way: switch off, all lights off, move to first position, running lights (orange ones) on, but not the headlights themselves, then the second position of the switch turns both on.

what's happening, is that as soon as I start the car, the headlights come on, but no running lights (this is with the switch in the off position) Moving the switch forward turns on the running lights, and then having the switch in the second position keeps both the running lights and headlights on, but the headlights get brighter. I checked and the high beams work normally, so it looks like there's a problem where the lights just won't turn off completely. So far (crossing fingers) they do turn all the way off when the car is not running. What my worry is, is that they will get to the point where they won't turn off at all, and it's going to kill my battery

any ideas of what I should be looking at to fix this problem? Sorry for the crummy explanation, it's 7am and I'm not quite..alert.

thanks in advance

Day-time running lights maybe? Not sure if foxbodys came with these?

You should first inspect the wiring harness near the lights to ensure that someone has not made any changes to the factory wiring for whatever reason.

I've had the car for almost three years now, and this has just started happening, it does not have daytime running lights and nothing has been done to the wiring in the time I've had it. To me it seems like either the switch is failing or maybe something else is wrong, but for the time I've owned it, if the lights were switched off, all of the lights were off and did not come on. I'm just not sure where to begin checking for problems and what to look for, but I'm concerned that if I don't do it shortly then the lights may end up staying on after I shut the engine off and I'll wake up to a dead battery

any help is greatly appreciated

That helps a lot. It could be either a relay or the actual switch. I will see what I can dig up for you.

very much appreciated sir, I did consider pulling the switch out of the dash and checking for corrosion but I'm at work and haven't had an opportunity to do so yet. I'm really not as familiar with the relays so if that seems to be the problem if there's anything you can let me know to look for that would help immensely

thanks again
