Default Bad Heater Core or Something Else?

Driving back up to school today my windshield started fogging up. I figgured it was the heater core letting go. There was no leak on the carpet or overheating, temp was up about a notch though. When I got here I noticed there was a large puddle of coolant dripping from the firewall. I popped the hood and it was leaking out of a hole in the firewall. The hole is about a foot directly below where the AC lines go into the wall. When I removed my emmisions last weekend I could have sworn there was some tube that went to that hole. Which brings me to my question; is this possably a leak that just needs to be plugged someplace or is that indeed my heater core. In my old truck when the core went there was uncontrolable steam, antifreeze all over the carpet, and it instantly pegged the temp gauge. Since I was able to see relitively well and able to drive another 70 miles I am slightly confused. Any thoughts would be appriciated.

Also, does anyone have any suggestions on something I could use as a hose union and clamp so I can bypass the core and drive home this weekend if it is the core? There are no parts stores I can get to arround me now.

I am about to post up details of how to do the heater core install with pics, and a solution to prevent it from happening again. I did mine this past week and it took about 2.5 hrs of solid work.
