Default TPS Voltage

Hi everyone,

I've been a member of this site for awhile, but I haven't posted in quite some time. I have a quick (hopefully) question about my '94 5.0.

The RPM's hang a little bit between gears. My buddy and I noticed this the other day so we got a volt meter to read the TPS and at idle it is reading almost 5 volts. As I understand it, it should read 4.5-5 volts at WOT and at idle it should right around .98-.99.

Is there a way to adjust the TPS voltage on the '94, or do I need to replace the TPS sensor altogether?

-Chris

If you are reading 5v at idle it sounds like the TPS is bad, what does it ready at WOT?

CEL indicator on? ..... Suggest to run a DIY KOEO/KOER self test and LUK the results. BTW.... "RPM's hanging" between shifts is normal, the system will keep RPM's above idle speed once the VSS input is > 6 MPH, called the dashpot function.

To add to what Joel stated, If you are reading 5v at the TPS this tells me you are probably probing the wrong wires. You need to probe green and black.

The hanging idle (if out of normal range) may be due to a malfuctioning/sticking IAC. But just as Joel said, start with KOEO/KOER there could be something else causing this.

Thanks for the responses guys. I'm not sure what it's reading at WOT, we did not test that although we should have. I'll attempt to do this KOEO/KOER test and report the results.

my best bet is that you probed the wrong wire

haha, I could've probed the wrong wire had I been the one actually doing it... but my buddy (who has more car knowledge than me) did it. Maybe he was having one of those days and make a small mistake. Happens to the best of us. I might retry probing it.

Ok, so this is an embarrassing question to ask but I'm quite a newbie when it comes to the TPS (or anything else electronic on the car)... but which setting on the meter do I use when probing the two wires? It doesn't specify in the stickies - at least the stickies I found.

N/m... I figured it out We definitely were probing the wrong wires the first time. This time I'm getting .92v. Should I adjust this so that it's .98v or is it okay where it's at? What would it mean for the voltage to be "low" or "under" .98?
