Question What should I start with?

I just bought a automatic 88 GT convertible and I dont even know where to begin on it. It has a couple issues but I got most of them fixed. I want it fast and want alot of hp but need to keep it street legal. What are the first few things recommended? Also what type and size headers should I get and exhaust? Was hoping to purchase all at once and have it thrown strait on. Remember I want hp. . Thanks.

Get fluids changed.
Strengthen chassis with subframe connectors, torque box, etc.
Gears.
Upgrade brakes
Now you can start with the motor
If you have the $$$ heads, intake, headers, exhaust, etc.
Make sure the chassis can handle the hp you want first

You can have 2000 hp and still be street legal. How much do you want to spend? If funds arn't a problem I'd throw in a 460 cubic inch 351 based Man-O-War crate engine (600+hp/600+lbsft torque) a Lentech C-4 with a brake and a Currie 9 inch rear with 4:10 gears Dennys driveshaft and a 250 shot of Nitrous. Then you'll want to stiffen and lighten the car with a complete Coil Over setup and Tubular K member and control arms for the front. Really good subframe setup, Nice four link set up with Coil over and mini tubbed in the rear and a 10 point cage. Throw on a set of Wheelie bars and a Parachute. Id use a set of custom built 2 inch headers and 4 inch collectors narrowed back down to 3 inch exhaust and a set of Flowmaster Super 44 Mufflers. You could still drive on the street and run pump gas. With the cash you could be driving this car in a month.

Gears to start for SOTP and build from there. Also, set a budget and figure out what your goals are first. "Fast" is nice but are you talking 300hp fast or 600hp fast because the budgets are waaaay different.

My budget isnt huge right now. But I plan on spending around 5k real soon. If I keep doing these back to back deployments my budget is going to be huge but thats not the life i need for my family. I want to keep the 5.0 in it for a few years and build it up and also build a 351 on the side but for now i just want to trick out the 5.0. So what do u think should come first? Also does any one have an opinion on which throttle body, intake manifold, headers, and exhaust should be thrown on? I want to order it all at once. I want long headers. Opinions?

Start with bolt ons like what I have in my sig but get 4.10's for that automatic, it needs all the help it can get. As cash allows, crack the motor open and do a nice H/C/I. After that it's the bottle, blower, snails or something like a N/A 408W. Like the others have said brakes and suspension are even more paramount at the beginning when big power is planned down the road...

Strengthen the body first. Make sure the car can handle the HP/torque.
Be realistic with the budget. Deployments are hard on the family (I am a chief in the
naval reserves) and you do not want to spend all the $$ on a car. Some
here may disagree.
