I haven't installed the t stat yet. Thats my next test.

Portmaster, you think its a bad radiator cap that I just bought? Does that sometimes happen?

Thanks

Im in the process of doing that now. I just pressurized the system with a dial tester, and nothing is escaping. Thats so wired, when the engine is hot, the radiator hose doesnt get pressurized but when I pressurize it myself, its fine. I'll be done with the t stat in about 2 hours as I have to go get the t stat. I will keep everyone posted.

Next test will be the water pump, maybe the fins on the inside of it arent turning. But then even when the engine gets hot, it should still pressurize. Heck I dunno, im at a loss.

Off to the t stat store, lol

Ok, I just got done with the t stat. I now get pressure on the radiator hose. The old t stat wasn't opening all the way. When I tried to open it, it sounded like Rice Krispies in milk. Its junk.

BUT, Everything under the hood is still really hot. I measured the temp at where the clutch cable goes into the firewall, and its at like 165 degrees. Hotter as you go down the cable because of the headers. The speedo cable is even hotter. Also, on the other side (passengers side) of the engine, its also extremely hot above the headers. The upper intake, I can't lay my hand on it, its so hot.

Is this all due to the headers? Should I put different headers on? These I got with the car already installed. They look like just straight Aluminum headers. Im getting really frustrated.

Has anybody experienced any heat under the hood from headers? I mean really hot.

Do they glow red at all ?

One potential is the timing. Your best bet is to get a timing light and see where your at.

Hi, No they arent glowing red.

So where should the timing be? Its bored 30 over, has a cam in it, have to run 93 octane, etc.

Thanks

Performance engines, and especially any engine with thin wall headers, is gonna make a ton of engine compartment heat, especially this time of the year. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if my underhood temp got over 170. Even on freezing cold days I can see heat waves coming out from under the front of my car.

hahah this is funny my old engine was the exact sameway , i always thought it ran way to hot but my temperature was always reading fine. the intake always got really hott and i couldnt touch it for more than a second . my friends intake never got that hott. everyone said it was fine if the temp wasnt reading high. i drove it everyday. i did notice it ran a lil different after it warmed up i dont think it had as much power. i found out my engine was bored .20 over thats funny because your is bored to. i really think it was the timing though. if your driven your car for a while and it gets pretty hott, does it not start up as fast? idk i never figured out what it was though but i ended up blowing a headgasket i dnt know what that was from though
