Hi Again Guys,
What would be the reason behind the timing making the engine run really hot? Lets just say the cooling system is fine. There are lots of opinions on here from some people and I am wondering what the timing has to do with it? Its a 93 mustang 5.0 bored 30 over, cammed up, etc.
Thanks

retarded ignition timing = begininging ignition to late in the cycle so that when the exhaust valve opens burning is still taking place, hence headers get red hot in some cases = up underhood temps

Not that I have to come along and say exactly, but exactly. Originally Posted by mjr46

I remember you were having problems, and I suggested checking the timing. As MJR has explained, that could be the reason.
Thanks Guys, I aquired a timing light and will check it on wednesday. I'll let you know what happenes.

Be sure to pull out the spout, that is how to check the base timing. The spout is a small box connector that comes out of the TFI harness. It hangs right hear the distributor. Pull out, start engine, check timing, shut engine, replace spout. Done.

advance it as far as possible as long as you dont have detonation.
advancing the timing will increase MPG, reduce underhood temps, make the car run smoother and increase low and mid range power(although you will lose a little on the top end)

Hi Guys, Well, I just got done checking the timing. Can you believe it was only 2 degrees before top dead center? Way Retarded!!!! So I adjusted it to 14 degrees and now waiting for the rain to stop and be dry out so I can test it. I'll bet it has more power too. I don't have the slightest clue on why it was that retarded. Maybe the screw holding the distributor down isn't doing its job. I'll watch it from now on.
After I did that, about 5 minutes later the engine started to sputter, shake and such. After trying a couple of things and after about 10 minutes of swearing, throwing tools, etc. I found out....IM RUNNING OUT OF GAS!!!!!
Sheesh.
I'll keep you all posted after I test drive it. I have to go get gas first and it has to stop raining and be dry on the roads. It never seen rain or wet roads.

That is exactly what I assumed it was from your other post. Glad you got it figured out. You will be fine, now get some gas.
