Default tuning

Ok guys. i have heard so many different things about tuning the 5.0 mustang. some guys tell me that there is not much to tune other then the timing and that getting a tune is a waste of time and money. then on the other hand, i have had guys tell me that they picked 30 plus horses at the wheels just from a tune. Wat do you guys think.

oh and if you know any good places that tune let me know. i live near the shore in New Jersey.

Untill you start doing some heavy mods like HCI or power adder, you don't need to worry about a tune with simple bolt ons, spend that money elsewhere.

I don't have much knowledge of tuning but from what I understand, on the 5.0s you basically have the option of getting a dyno tune (with or w/o a chip?) or tuning software like Tweecer, Anderson PMS, and a few others.

It also depends on what kind of setup you have. If you don't have a ton of mods or engine work, then a tune isn't really worth while and it won't get you the HP gains. I'm sure everybody else can elaborate and I'm actually curious to see some responses myself b/c I'm doing an engine swap with HCI soon

i have heads, cam, roller rockers, smog delete, hardened pushrods, ford racing lifters,70 mm throttle body and spacer, and ford racing mass air meter,BBK cold air, headmen headers, full exhaust and a GT40 upper and lower intake on my car. basically everything other then pistons crank and block are aftermarket. i think you are right tho. they are very basic engines so there is not much to tune.

timing , fuel pressure and make sure no codes exist.......not much to tune until you get up there in hp as for what other people have gained, it depends on what they had for mods

My opinion is slightly different, so I will offer up my thoughts....

I try to think in the 'long term' when making changes/suggestions for others.

When/if you get into the higher performing mods (h/c/i, boost, >24Lb injectors, etc.) are you going to be tuning the car yourself using a J3 chip like a TwEECer, Moates F3, Moates QuarterHorse, or similar? Maybe a non J3 device like the Anderson PMS?
If so, then I suggest investing in this tuning system As Soon As Possible. There is a learning curve to using these devices, and the sooner you take it up, the sooner you will learn....

If you are going to take the car to a dyno shop, then the above is worthless...

Why Tweecer all the way? Moates Quarterhorse uses the same software, datalogs, and gives you the ability to change your tune on the fly for half the cost.

I said Tweecer because I have had great experience with it. It has an excellent support group and is also reasonably priced at $500. It's all a personal preferance and one I have knowledge and experience about. ahittz, have you actually used a Tweecer or Moates? I'd reccomend a PMS, but to be honest, I do not actually have experience with it. I know Kweb is running one.

I am using a Moates QH, $249.99 and it does all a tweecer will do plus more. I like the PMS but seriously, go stand alone when you can take full control of your A9L or A9P?
