Default Limits of the AODE

Where should I draw the line on engine mods with a stock, albeit rebuilt AODE?

Surprisingly, the AODE can actually handle some decent power. However, it would be wise to add a shift kit and transmission cooler to help further increase you transmission life. The #1 cause of trans failure is heat. The shift kit will help firm up the shifts and keep the transmission in one gear during shifts versus an overlapping of two gears(gives you that comfortable, granny shift). With this being said, a stock internal AODE should be able to handle 300rwhp/350rwtq comfortably. My AODE withstood countless drag strip passes and 271rwhp & 311rwtq. However when I upgraded to boost, the AODE began slipping after a couple of months with the Vortech(I probably had 320rwhp at that time). Luckily I had a used backup AODE I bought a year prior. It was built w/4r70w internals and such. This included stronger bands and a much tougher OD band along with a lower gearset. And the "70" stands for 700lb-ft torque capacity. So far it has held up well.

I have a question also if you could help? I bought a motor and tranny together with 60k miles on it that came out of a town car, not sure what year but it is a 5.0 motor. does anyone know which tranny this is RF-E0AP-7A040-BD. It's an auto tranny probably either an aod or aode. the pan shape is almost rectangled with a triangle shaped area off of drivers rear side and a smaller bit off passenger rear if that makes sense???? i need to know so i can buy a stall conv. before i drop it in my project and to see if i need a shortened drive shaft..

If it is a 5.0 towncar, then you have an AOD transmission. It will take quite a bit of modification to get it to work though. Hope this helps.

what will make it difficult? I understand the size of the tranny will make it a bit difficult with exhaust piping room but with shorty's and a good exhaust shop that shouldn't be a huge problem? only other thing would be findin tranny mounts and if the shifter doesn't go in smooth to the factory mustang area. do you think it would be in my best interest to go with a T5 and find a manual ECU??? the car was a 4 cyl with a 5 speed before I stripped it all out so it already has the clutch pedal and all..
