Default HELP!

Hey I am a brand new member and have owned my 91 mustang gt for 2 weeks now. So far so good....until tonight...

I was stopping at a stop light so I held the clutch in and threw it into neutral while the light was red. As I press down on the clutch again to shift to first, the pedal goes all the way to the floor with no resistance and I am left unable to shift.

Anybody know what the problem could be. Cable? Or a friend of mine said there is a small plastic part with some teeth on it that can strip out after awhile leaving the person stranded without being able to shift.

Any help would be much appreciated!

That is what I was thinking happened. But right now I am still kinda mostly learning on how to fix things. Uhm how difficult is it to put in a new cable and can I pick one up at any parts place like advanced auto?

If it is the cable, not the quadrant, it's dead easy to replace. Easiest of you have a helper, someone just to lift up on the clutch pedal while you're trying to get the cable into the clutch fork, as it's a self adjusting system, you lift up on the pedal, it releases the cable allowing you to pull it out and place it in the fork. Other than that, one small screw on the firewall, one on the strut tower holding the cable, un-clip it from the quadrant and it's out.

Ok well the cable isn't broken and now I can shift 1st-5th but not reverse, it starts grinding. Also it was noticeably more difficult to go through the gears when I took it around the block. There is a chirping type of noise that is constant when the car is in gear and I am driving.

One last thing, I can put it into reverse when the car is off, then start it and it reverses fine. Any suggestions?

the chirp could be a bad TOB or pilot bearing

yeah the chirp is most likley a throw out bearing.. i have the same issue but that doesnt matter to much :P and it grinds when it goes in reverse most of time time :P try putting the car in 5th gear then slide it into reverse.. shouldnt grind then.

alright thanks I'll be sure to check out those things tonight. I just didn't want to drive it because I was a little afraid something else would break and I didn't want to just jam it into reverse. Thanks for the suggestions to look at! Gives me a starting point at least!
