I had my battery checked in autozone and the meter read the battery was good. I replaced it and it works fine now.( I had the same exact problem you described)

Starter Solenoid may be going.

I had a similar problem, then one day the solenoid got stuck and the car just kept cranking over and over on it's own. Replaced the solenoid to fix that and inadvertently ended up fixing the other problem as well. Don't you just love when stuff like that happens

Replaced solenoid and starter a couple years back before this issue cropped up. Starter turns flywheel, but no "fire". Have heard "ignition control module" mounted on distributor can lose integrity due to thermal insulation breaking down and not function when hot. Anyone dealt with this?

i have been driving the car more lately and the problem seems to come and go. but no matter what when the car is warm it will turn over quite a few times before it will start but when its cold it fires right away. i have checked the timing. the battery is brand new, and since it has a pro billet msd distributor it wouldnt be the module. i also noticed the coolant temp sensor has been replaced. I have not tried the starter solenoid yet but i guess that should be next

Fubar008 - just fyi - I replaced Ignition Control Module last night, and Autozone tested the old moduel which "FAILED". They indicated this failure would cause the car to not start when hot! Hopefully, this resolves my issue (cross your fingers) - sorry yours is still a mystery.

It just plugs in. Should be under your driver's seat on a '89.

Having a spare is not a bad idea so get another one and try it might be a way to go.
