Default headlights suddenly go out

i was driving to work monday and the headlights on my '86 GT both go out at the same moment ... the dash lights are on the tail lights on and dome light on.. all the remaining lights seem to go dim go brighter then dim then brighter both with the engine running an not running .. i have changed the light switch already no dice there all i do know with the dimmer/multi switch does not lock into high beam mode oh and by the way if i pull on the dimmer all 4 lights light up .... any suggestions? i am planning on changing the multi switch this weekend unless there are more ideas on where to look first or if anybody has had this happen ...

Ive had the same prob. on my 89 gt. from what ive read it has something to do with the wires for the fog lights being to small. Heres a link on how to fix it http://www.corral.net/tech/maintenance/foglights.html

great info the only drawback is some knuckle head that owned it before me wrecked the front end and replaced the gt bump cover with the lx no fog lights and going through late model resto. the cover is 370 and it has no fogs but there is a switch for them and i believe connectors in the bump cover lol so if ya have a great line on the 85-86 gt rectangle fog set up im all ears

and i did get the multi switch to lock into high and unplugged the 2 inner bulbs but it didnt lock with the lever i had to uhm trick it into lock with the dreaded push on the switch from the inside trick

Besides what everyone else has said, Do you have your BRIGHTS on when this happens? IF so, than that could lead to other possibilities.

i do have brights and have the multi switch at this point on the bright side with the center 2 lights unplugged so i have those other 2 so i can at least drive at night .. i am somewhat baffles as to why i have brights but no dim i assume if the ground is bad i would have no lights up front? the headlight switch itself has been replaced the alt. is throwing 13.4 volts under full load i know not quite up to par but close enough for what i am dealing with ... going for the multu switch this weekend provided i can find one in town

When I drove an 89lx 5.0 back in the day, I went to see a movie and came out and had no low beam headlights. Everything else worked as before. I pulled the bulbs and found that BOTH low beam filaments had burned out at the same time. How? Don't know but I got two new bulbs and those lasted for years.

well gentlemen i found my culprit there was a small body panel support right behind the passenger low beam socket ant a tiny nick in the wire to the low side guess what happens when metal hits wire ... so no i have a new headlight switch and a new multi switch which is cool cause my multi switch would not lock in the high position now it all is in tact
