Default RE: crate engine..

I purchased the FMS 345hp Crate Motor and havent looked back.

To make the 345hp that FMS claims, you need to read the fine print...Cobra or GT40 intake, 65mm Throttle Body at a minimum and Headers. I purchased the Cobra Intake w/65mm Throttle Body and BBK Chrome Headers..I would wager I was making their claimed 345hp as I was hurting a lot people at the lights.

This is what it looked like prior to the install:

I have since purchased and installed the following:

AFR 165cc Heads, Vortech S-Trim with 8-9lbs of boost, Anderson PowerPipe and 1.72 rockers.

Here is a current picture of the engine bay.

Prior to the Anderson PowerPipe and 1.72 rockers install, I dyno'ed at

389 rwhp and 397 rwtq.....all this with a backyard tune from three gear heads...

With the Anderson PowerPipe and 1.72 rockers installed, I can guarantee you that I am well over 400+ in HP and TQ to the tires. The difference in both of these mods were definitely worth every penny. Go to my website to see everything...just keep in mind that I still have the " hyper-pathetic pistons " as well. It is all in the tune!!!

I already have plans to Chip and Tune the motor...I was practically guaranteed 470+ rwhp with the tune. The only thing that worries me is not the pistons, but the block. My hotrod is a weekend warrior, so there is approximately 11000 miles on the motor and 3500 miles on the Vortech...everything was purchased new and broke in nicely.

Get the motor....build from there. I plan on purchasing the Factory Five Cobra kit car and will build the same drivetrain setup, as I know it works. I have not had any problems with this motor. Good Luck with your build.

By the way...here is what my motor powers....she is named the BMNLSC:

Nice car..but if FMS says that the motor makes 345 hp how come your only making 390 with all those mods? is 345 hp supposed to be the Hp at the crank? i like what you dropped the motor in. very clean car and motor and one hell of a sleeper! Looks good

I dont see how the crate motors can list HP to the tires when 1) they are not installed in a car 2) cannot account for the air/fuel ratio you have for your setup and 3) cannot account for your transmission type (auto or manual).

So to answer your question simply...yes the HP rating is to the crank.

Thanks for the props...

The hyper pistons just aren't as durable. A batch of bad gas, clogged fuel filter, dying injector, failing fuel pump - they're more vunerable. They will work though.

yeah i want to throw a RPM II manifold on there and a couple other things. i think i could get close to 345. then i will just wait a couple years and start slowly building a motor that can handle 14lbs of boost and be streetable. with this crate motor can anyone guess quarter mile times for it?
theres alot more factors to 1/4 mile times than HP/TQ numbers. i personally dont race but there are people that can help you more in that area. cause you can have all the HP/TQ in the world but if you cant get it to the ground. then what good is all that HP/TQ. good traction is a must to get the best out of a car. suspension plays a part in it. again theres is lot of factors in racing then just HP.
I agree. Just as an example, I have built the top end of my car with heads, cam, intake and exhaust, but have 3.55 gears with stock style suspension. My best times to date are 13.2@104. As a comparison, a friend of mine has taken a completely stock motor (thats stock heads, cam, intake) added a 125 shot of NOS, pulled everything off the car that he can for weight reduction and replaced the entire suspension for a good launch, then threw in 4.10 gears. He just ran an 11.85. Its a trade off. Do you want a race car that runs good times or a street car that is quick but gets decent gas mileage.
