5.0 Header Questions
Ok, a few questions...

1. I was looking into some Full Length Headers but every site I go to say that they are for 5spds only... im running an AOD... any input?

2. Are stock headers equal or unequal lenth? Which should I order and will a factory h pipe bolt up to either one? Cause I dont get how a equal length headers would bolt up to the same thing that some unequals would?

Thanks for any input

Stock headers on an 86 might actually be an exhaust manifold rather than headers, and yes there is a difference. But either way, stock is unequal length. The unequal length headers are obviously unequal tubing length and visa versa, and they bolt up just to stock h-pipe, although it is in your best interest to get a aftermarket h-pipe along with headers. The equals simply extend farther out laterally from the engine (towards the wheels) to allow them to collect to the same place (hpipe) where as the unequals take the shortest route. Thus, the equals will still end at the h pipe, they just take a little longer to get there.Equals allow for better balancein tube pressure, making flow increase slightly. The difference in which to buy lies in the fact that unequals may allot for a slight horsepower gain, with possibly a decline in torque - but not likely - depending on your system setup. If I need to explain this, I can. However, the decision that you need to make is between ease of installation, and practicality. It is really difficult to install equal length headers in tight spaces, especially if you cannot put them in from the top of the engin (you may have to disconnect steering columns etc). If you think you can do it, well fine, but it is generally harder. Equals cost more. I went with unequals, and they are just great. Whatever you do, buy from FRPP, MAC, BBK.
1 they make some headers for the aod that are long tubes but you have to go with a better company to get them and they are a little pricey.

2.the headers on your 86 are unequal length meaning that the tubes that comes from each exhaust port are different lengths. the equal length headers are the one that have each tube the same length. they all wind up in the stock location so any h-pipe for shortie headers will work. i would go with the bbk equal length shorties and bbk h-pipe so you would have a match set

alright.. thanks to all... Im thinking of running some BBKs w/ H-Pipe .. is an x-pipe really worth the money? Im not building a strip killer... just a mean daily driver... and thanks for all the info, 95Stealth installing will be no prob. my dad has a shop in the back yard and he builds hot rods. I just like to go out and learn my self and on top of things he doesn't get into the whole fuel injection era (partly b/c everyone around here just run mean carbs and cant afford efi) so thanks for all the help
