Default guage cluster, or sending unit

My fuel guage is on the fritz and just want some input before a spend money on the wrong end of the car. When I got the car a month ago the guage would never go above 1/4 tank no matter how much gas you had. Now it just sits on E. I know my temp guage is wrong because it was sitting on the "R" of normal and when I hooked up a mechanical guage the car never broke 180.

Does this sound like the in tank sending unit has gone bad, or is it all guage cluster? Also has anyone bought a used cluster off ebay, and would they recommend doing that?

to tell you the truth there is no easy way to tell which is bad, you can with an ohm meter and a friend adding gas to the tank and you taking the reading from the sender, but its a pain. the majority of the time its the sender, but dont blame if its the gauge. if it were mine i would just get a new sending unit, a pump and sock filter, and do them at the same time b/c if its more than a few years old its time to change it anyways. then you eliminate a couple of common problems at once. and maybe solve yours

dont be surprised when everyone was wrong. your problem sounds like the anti-slosh module on the back of your cluster... dont know though.

its the sending unit its a common problem with our cars and all you have to do is drop the tank and put in a new sending unit and it will work fine

hey good guess STANGLX2002, where did you get that idea from. im just saying more than just the sending unit goes bad, the slosh modules go bad as well, also a ground could be loose, or corroded.

I haven't dropped the tank on one of these in years. I remember the filler neck being the hardest part because it had a strap on it? The previouse owner had just put a new fuel pump in the car not that long ago but I think he didn't do it right because he said he has one of the fuel lines attached with a hose clamp. Also the filler neck is loose inside the the fuel door compartment, so I'm sure he forgot something there. As I go through this car I keep finding things that are rigged. The other owner wasn't much of a mechanic even though he owned a shop.

The slosh modules doesnt go bad sry your wrong. The lever gets gummed up when the car sits for a long time and cant loosen itself back up to work properly again. I have changed a lot more then one of these on plenty of cars and probably a lot more then you so i do know what im talking about.

so if the sending unit is stuck in one spot then the gauge will fluctuate, think about what youre saying.
