Default speed problem

Here goes. I have a 91 5.0 w/t5 </P>

When I got the car the speedo bounced. It has been regeared with 3.73's. I first replaced the old speedo gear that had no teeth left with a new 23 tooth one. The old one was a 23 tooth also. Why were the teeth missing if it was the right tooth count? It worked better for about a day. It only bounced after 20 mph or so. I got under the dash and messed with the speedo cable a bit to make sure it was all the way in the cluster. It appeared to be fine. Now it bounces wildly. It goes from 20 to 140. Should the cable go directly above the clutch quadrant to above and to the left of it. It seems like it is in a bad angle right now putting it in a bind. It comes out, curves left, then right, then through the firewall now. So, is my cable bad, cluster bad, cruise speed sensor bad, or output shaft gear bad. I will have a better look at it tomorrow to see if I can figure it out a little better. Thank ahead for the help.</P>

Check your new speedo gear. Sounds like the gear itself is getting eaten up in your tranny. I looked through one of my old 5.0's and it said 3.73's should take a 21-toothed speedo for T5 manual. Can anyone else validate that? I could be wrong. <edited><editID>95stang</editID><editDate>37954.8745717593</editDate></edited>
