Default Rebuild and performance top end

Hey guys,
Eventually I plan on doing as my title says. I would like to pull the motor get it all cleaned up put new pistons, bearings, and so forth and keep the stock crank. I have been looking around and in google if I type summit engine rebuild kit for a 5.0 it comes up with a pretty complete package except for rods. Would it be worth getting new rods then, or is it ok to use the original ones if I get them tested or something? Then comes the top end, I was on late model restoration.com and on there they have top end kits that come with just about everything, heads, cam, intake, the only thing i think I would have to buy seperate are push rods and rollers. I think it was for about 2300$. I am not quite sure how much horse it adds, but does that sound like pretty much all I would need then? any suggestions on getting parts any where would be nice. You should deffinately talk to your local machine shop. They can help you determine if your rods are ok. As for buying parts on line: always call. That way they know what you need. But as for the last bit put a new set of lifters in as well.

a head/cam/intake install should get you about 100 hp if it's done right

Alright, that does not sound bad at all. Would you recomend cleaning the block up and honing it your self? I have never done it, but have read about it. I have also looked at shop prices and it does not sound to expensive to have them just clean the block and hone it.

You need machining equipment to do it. Take the block to a local machine shop you trust and have them prep it for a rebuild, the rest you can do with tools and mechanical knowledge, and if you get stuck anywhere you can ask. Stock rods are fine depending on what you're gonna do, just have a shop check them out for straightness, bore concentricity etc. If they need to be replaced, you can get decent rods from Scat etc that are rated for 500hp/6,500rpm for like $200 for a full set of floating pins units.

K sweet, i just found the rods your talking about earlier. I was going to keep the stock crank to I suppose you should get that checked over to? I am only on planning on doing the top end kit, after that I would not have enough money to boost or super charge. Its just going to be all motor whatever I end up doing. Thanks you guys are a big help.

Yeah, bring the crank and rods in for them to check, they can machine them as needed. If you want to do boost later, then rebuild with some decent forged pistons and good rings, and build it for like 9:1 compression and it will run fine n/a and with a blower later.

As far as 9:1 What pistons/Chamber size would you go for? Im looking at doing the same thing with the ford racing heads, they come in 58 and 64. How much power will the stock crank/rods last?
