Hey everyone.

My traction lok is in need of a rebuild. I also have a bent axle.

Late Model Restoration has a kit that comes with axles and the 31 spline unit. If I buy this kit, I will naturally replace the bearings as well.

Question: do I need to go through the procedure of setting backlash and so forth, if I am not replacing my 3.55 gears?

Yes anytime you change the carrier or gearset you must set backlash and pinion dept. You might as well get a complete install kit with all new bearings and axle bearings and seals.

 

before you take it apart, write down what backlash is set at currently, then use marking compound to run the pattern, take a pic of it, then remove carrier and remove ring gear and install it on new carrier then reinstall and check all your measurements you wrote down, if it all falls back in at the same spec, torque caps back down and be on your way, make sure that you put the carrier shims back in the spots they came out of, I have done this with sucess many times
