You could start out by retarding the timing a few degrees and yes....big time....putting your stock gears in would help.

When was the car last tuned up? Being out of tune will eat up a lot of gas.

gears are killing you! plus 19 lbs injectors is all you need. check for unmetered air. stay off the gas pedal. check for codes

those gears are not hurting his gas mileage.

Check your computer for codes!
Clean your MAF, check for vac leaks, give the car a full tune up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, PCV, air filter, fuel filter). And if you do not know the history on the O2 sensors... replace them!

We need to know what injectors you have too. What color are they?

Hmmmm what transmission do you have?
Injectors all have a color like Adder said take a pic and upload it.
Basically all of what Adder said is great to check and should be done first before trying to fix a problem with a tune. How does the car behave around town, bucking, driveability issues, etc? Let us know definitely about the injectors. That would be something if they were green 42lbers becaus maybe the previous owner had FI or other performance parts on it and somehow left the injectors on there. Here is a chart I've used before, anyone can add or edit that as I know there are different colors and such:

grey 14#
orange 19# (stock for foxbody's)
light blue 24#
red 30#
dark blue 36#
black are Lucas only 38#
light green 42#

Good luck.
