Default AOD Question

Im just trying to understand my AOD a little better. I installed a 93 5.0 AOD in my 69 Coupe behind a mild mannered 351. It gets up nicely, and seems that the AOD torque converter might be a little peppier than the old FMX one that I had on it before. The thing is that, it will shift into OD anytime i hit 50mph. I have 3.0 gears in the rear (3.70's waiting to go in) and when it shifts to OD it doesnt kick back down when I get on it.

Is that normal? How do you drive your AOD? I have been reading today that I should only use OD when I get on the highway and am ready for it, otherwise to keep it in D (which was 2 according to my old trans)

Like I said, im just trying to understand this thing, and how the lock up OD converter works. And any info would be great.

I have a 90 mustang gt with the aod or doa (dead on arrival) transmission. Its the worst transmission ever engineered. If you want the trans to kick down from OD to drive you have to manually shift it down, it will kick down automatically from drive to second when in big D, If you try to manually shift from 1ST to D (second gear) it will take forever to go in second. The aod trans automatically shifts from 1st, 2nd, D, d way too fast for any performance driving. They sell valvebodies like from lentech or silver fox that is better than stock for shifting but by the time you spend all that money trying to correct a lemon trans you are way better off putting a c4 trans in from pa performance. I have a pa performance trans in my garage waiting for time to install it. I don't need the headaches or overdrive from the aod.

The AOD transmission has a TV cable on it that has to be adjusted properly. I don't remember the exact procedure, but if you do some searching on the Internet you can find it. Ford recommends the use of a pressure gauge to set it properly, but there is a site where a guy has a detailed write up on how to adjust it until you get it set where you want it. If it is not set correctly, it can cause your transmission to fail. I had to play with mine several times before I got it set to shift into overdrive at 60. But mine was built and modified before I bought it.

Just down shift to 3rd!!! Easy as that mine will kick down by its self only if im doing below 70, above that it wont, its because of my 3.73's, My aod is the same as yours however i have a 3k stall, built with HD clutches and shift kit..., but yeah man just down shift manually!! problem solved, o.., and dont adj the tv cable if all shift are going in when they need to, because that is all its going to do,, delay or speeds up shifts at different rpm's!!
