tranny problems please help
hi i have a 1989 ford mustang lx v8 auto tranny aod, was rebuilt tranny when i bought from a mechanic at sorens ford, i put 2000 miles on it, it always shifted pretty smooth, replaced radiator and refilled tranny fluid. went to put it in storage last year and i took off and it goes from 1st to 2nd gear but wont shift to 3rd or 4th gear, reverse works just wont shift out of 2nd gear. any ideas on wats wrong

Time for a REAL rebuild!! I had an AOD rebuilt a while back and when i went to go pick it up i test drove it and the fugin thing wouldnt go out of 1st, i was pissed, they hadnt adj the TV cable! Ergo i HATE SHOPS!!! Anywaythat tranny went out 1 month later.., under warranty so made shop rebuild it right ( servo was not replaced 1st time?) 3 years later n runnin strong, so basically believe someone you trust to rebuild a AOD!

That same thing just happened to mine. I wasnt paying 1500$ for a rebuild so I done it. Learned way more than I bargained for! No no no its in the car running strong. Mine had 3 of the 5 forward clutches and steels burnt out. Reverse clutch pac was great the Od band was histo and if u tackle it.. Quick note if you buy a kit get the red or blue clutches the brown are ok but done grip as good. The hardest thing literaly was removal and replacement of the tranny! I have a thread and asap ill upload photos and a walk thru on the rebuild.

yup it's toast
my first 5.0 was a brand new '90 AOD gt (i didnt know any better)
i had it for 6 years before giving up on AOD's
it was on it's third trans, and that was starting to whine. so i traded the car for a snowmobile
if you have hard part damage (a rebuild estimate ONLY counts on replacing seals and clutches... no bands or drums) look into the ford motorsport "wide ratio kit" it uses parts from the aode and not only has a better 1st and 2nd gear ratio, it has a larger drum and band for OD which is the weakest part of an AOD
that kit used to be $600 and the 3 parts i needed to just make it stock was over $1000
they wanted $2100 for a stock rebuild and i did the wide gear rebuild with a tci 2200 converter for about $1900 (shop did all the work)
more FYI, the converter cant be flushed, so you'll need a new one if the fluid is contaminated. use a stallion or lentech and dont go lower than 3000
my 2200 felt stock

well i finaly decided to pull the tranny out today, took about 4hours, expected. now i dread puting it back together. anyway ive decide that ill take the challenge and rebuild myself. cant be much worse than doing a motor rebuild, yea that wasnt fun. not sure whats all bad on the tranny or really what im looking for, any advice. ill check it out more tomorrow, that was enough work for one day.

Don't mean to hijack.. i an new here and will be following this thread as i may need a rebuild as well. My situation is different - 1988 5.0 Auto, and it seems to slip in drive and in reverse. i mash on the gas and it take a few seconds before it catches and starts moving forward? Any ideas? could it be just the clutch packs or does the whole thing need a rebuild? much thanks
