84 gt 150 rpm idle problem
Hello, I have a 84 gt automatic 5.0 that is idleing very low to the point that I have to hold the pedal down when I stop to keep it at 500 rpm or it dies.
When I bought my mustang it had a crack in the gas line that made me idle high. After fixing the crack now I have my low idle problem.
Also when I stop I smell gas so I think its running a little too rich but everything I try I can't adjust the mixture.
I don't know much about fixing cars beyond simple stuff. This mustang is my own little project to try and learn how to do things on my own.
Some things I have tried.
Change air filter
Used seafoam additive to clean my internals.
Autozone didn't know what to suggest so now I'm here. Hopefully someone can help.
I did buy a haynes manual but my specific problem was not in there.
Thanks,
Micah

look around the throttle cable. the lines that attach to it, theres a bracket holding it all together. on that bracket there will either be a screw or a bolt that you can adjust open or closed. adjust it open to where it idles on its own and then whereever you truly want it. that should fix your problem.

Fuel injected carb? I think you mean port injection with a throttle body. Like stangmanmike33 said, there is an idle set screw on the bottom of the throttle body. There is a specific procedure for doing this called "base idle reset." Look around the forums for info on how to do one; it involves some special steps involving the IAC servo and the computer.

one quick question.(and i really feel stupid...)
the thing that looks like a solenoid. what is it?(lol see i feel dumb) and is it suppose to move? i had my wife rev the engine to see if it did any thing and it does nothing. nothing except set the idle by turning the screw that moves it...
I looked up the model number which is E2VE-9E957-AB and all i got on it is a random post on a forum claiming that it may be a idle control solenoid that is controlled by a vacuum not electronically.
is that a problem?
while i now have the idle set back to 550 like it is suppose to be. it idles pretty rough(it did before i set the idle also).
thanks agian

Only way to learn is to get your hands dirty
Cars are just like computer programming in a new language, gotta crash your compiler a few times to figure your way around
P.S. when it comes to brakes get some help from someone that knows how to work on them
