Default Help with setting timing

Got a 1988 LX, look at my sig for mods. It seems to hesitate a little when i romp on it, get an occasional backfire, sorta sounds like timing to me. I havent had a chance to work on it yet and honestly i dont know how. My question is how can i adjust the timing so it wont hesitate and what not. I have limited access to tools because im station overseas so the simplest method would be best.

thanks

There are many threads on this forum dealing with setting the initial timing. Do a search and you are sure to find one.

I'd put my money on it being a carb problem, not a timing issue

I'm only familiar with Holley & Q jet carbs. And its been a long time since I've messed with them.

Seems like I recall a hesitation on tip in was almost always too small an accel shot. Too much accel pump would not likely stumble. Just feel a bit soft and not as powerful. Same holds true for EFI tuning.

And the backfire would be a combo of fuel, timing, and cam overlap.
I'd first try adding fuel for tip in (I assume you have a mechanical accel pump that can be adjusted)

This is a excellent cause for getting a wideband or borrowing one. It makes this kind of tweaking 10 times easier.

Regards,
Rich

i only put 105 octane in it, it only backfires on rare occasion, and i messed with the iginition timer a little today and it seemed to help a little bit. im gonna try toying with the regulator today.
