Default brake light indicator not working.

I am getting a brake and light inspection and the dang brake indicator light is not coming on. Is it common for the bulb to go out and how hard is it to change it behind the instrument cluster? Its a 89 5.0 LX also could it maybe be a bad switch?

It COULD of course be the switch, but take into consideration your car is an 89 and the bulb is most likely out, especially if it doesn't perform the fail check when first turning on the ignition. If you decide you'd like to test the switch instead, take apart your center console and unplug the switch, then jumper the wire terminals. To get behind the cluster requires disassembling the front of your dash, you can find a guide on it through a little searching.

This bulb comes on for low fluid and the ebrake, so your best bet is to go ahead and change the bulb for safeties sake

I see, yeah it doesn't come on when I turn on the car must be the bulb, thanks I'll look into the guide on the dash.
Thank you going to work on it in the morning.

So I changed the bulb and nothing changed. Still doesn't flick on when I start the car?
