dizzy gear stripped off...cause?

Take the dizzy out. The oil pump shaft inserts into the bottom of the distributor (the crank drives the cam via timing chain, the cam drives the dizzy via the cam gear/dizzy gear, and the dizzy drives the oil pump). It'll be below the cam gear, you'll see it. TAPE some extensions + socket together, attach an electric drill, and spin the pump
Look at the bottom shaft of the dizzy. There will be a hexagonal insert = oil pump shaft

well some interesting discoveries were made! after pulling the engine and putting it on a stand I removed the oil pan. upon removing it I found some interesting things inside! (see pic)
one appears to be my oil pump shaft...also answers why I couldn't figure out how to spin the damn thing!
the other I believe is from some lifters I had blow apart quite some time ago.. They are shaped the same and appear to be the same size wire material...
you can see a small piece of wire stuck in the oil pump (the cause)
so time to get a new pump.. is there anything else I need to inspect to make sure no damage was done to the cam or pistons? I will pull the heads if I absolutely have too...may use that as an opportunity to paint some engine parts

You're going to need an oil pump, a new drive shaft for it, (I'd use an ARP), plos I'd get a good distributor, like an MSD.
I have a hard time thinking that gear just fell off the old one, everyone of them I've ever had to work with was at light press fit.....

the gear didn't fall off, it was still on the shaft when I pulled the dizzy... I removed it myself. I Feel no play in I currently but agree I need a new one. Is msd really the best option? oil pump shouldn't be an issue, I just want an oem replacement.
