So I found out today that I can turn the ignition and start the car without the key being in. The key and ignition will stick in the start position as well. If I just replace the ignition cylinder will this fix the problem or will there be more internal problems in the steering colum?
Do the mustangs have the small access hole in the bottom of the colmn to push the button in to release the lock cylinder? If so there shold be no reason to tear the column apart, just replace the cylinder.
That cylinder is nothing more than a lock, It rotates and pushes a linkage rod that moves a switch in the column . That switch in the column is where the power is supplied to the ignition.
I had a problem that the cylinder wouldn't always come back after start-up unless I forced it. the engine was running but I had no light, accessories, etc. I changed the cylinder last w/e and it's been good since. but i'm thinking 89 setup is way different. with a t20 bit, a Phillips head, a new cylinder and 5 mins you can steal these cars...lol

His problem is the lock will turn without the key, doesn't sound like anything is wrong with the actual switch to me, says car starts without key, then the "lock" gets stuck on. I'd replace the cylinder first as its cheaper then go from there.
Yes there is an access hole to remove the cylinder when turned to the correct position.

Lol yea I had a serious brain fade on this one lol for some reason I was relating this to a previous post I seen where the car would crank it self when the battery was connected , and it would start with the key off. lol
