high pitched whine from rear at idle '92 5.0 5 speed
68k miles. When I crank it the whine starts immediately. It is definitely from the back of the vehicle. It will just sit there and whine at idle and the tone never changes. It is a much higher tone than the fuel pump makes when you first turn on the ignition and is a very smooth, constant whine. Doesn't sound like a bearing to me. Almost like a small electric motor at high RPM, just to try to give an idea of what it sounds like, but I don't "think" that's what it is. I really don't have a clue. This is my first Mustang, bought in late 2014. I don't recall this noise 1000 miles ago.
It is not so loud that I hear it while in the car (flowmasters), but it can definitely be heard standing at the back of the car. It seems very close when I stick my head under the rear of the car. Haven't put it on a lift yet while running to see if I can pinpoint the location.
Any ideas? I did a search here but didn't come up with anything. Thanks in advance.

So the next question would be, drive it and ignore it till I get bored and change it, or is this what I should expect just prior to a fuel pump failure?
I won't listen to it forever like this, but I don't want to drop the tank any sooner than I "need" to. Thanks.
And I may replace the filter in the meantime.

I just talked to my favorite shop of 25 years. I could drop the tank or have them do it but don't want to yet. I think I'll just listen to it till I don't want to anymore. It's not a daily driver so I just don't think I'll sweat it.
Thanks guys.

If it was me Id change it but that's just because Ive had the fuel tank out of 40 different cars and can do it in a couple hrs. As long as you know there is a risk of getting stranded then drive it till it quits.

Having the OCD tendancies that I do, I expect I won't listen to it long before I drop the tank myself. I did my little truck a few months ago.
I won't be putting more than 3-4k miles a year on this vehicle.
Any particular recommendations of pumps, or ones to avoid? Thanks in advance.

I'm looking at ordering a BBK 110 Lph Fuel Pump (86-97), plus gas fill neck grommet and some fuel line disconnect tools. This is for a stock 5.0 LX. It has some bolt on performance stuff but nothing of any major consequence.
Should that do it?
Edit: And a fuel filter while I'm at it.
