Default Can the hiss be stopped?

For some time now my 93 has hissed when turning the wheel. It's of course a power steering thing...rack/pump I don't know. This isn't a screech, just a pronounced hiss when turning left or right.

Now I've tried Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak which is thick red stuff. No luck. I flushed the system and put in all new ATF. That's where I'm at now. Got the same hiss, just a different day.

I've looked all over and read a lot of things but I'm not finding anyone who's fixed the problem. I've seen some people using some synthetic fluids. Anyone have specific product they are using that showed some improvement? Anyone had any luck with a rack change? Any particular rack that worked?

Just looking for any details or specifics that anyone can provide. Many, many thanks!

Hissing is likely a pressure line or fitting, possibly a kink in one of the hoses.

I've never personally heard a pump or rack hiss before, especially over the sound of a running motor. I'd try and verify which one it is. With the car idling, have a friend slowly turn the wheel while you carefully listen above and below the car. Then you could also check the hose's with a long screw driver, resting it lightly on a hose to feel for high frequency vibrations. Now of course, be careful when doing this on a running car, use your head to not make any common sense mistakes like loose clothing and take note of any moving parts, belts, pulleys, fan etc.

And most importantly, if you do this, TAKE YOUR TIME, don't rush this.

Ummmm, disregard what I said. I'm having second thoughts as I don't know your skill level on shadetree mechanics lol.

Default I'll look and listen

Thanks for the feedback. I'll take a look and listen. As for my skill level... I think I'm decent at working on this car. I've had it for 18 years this year and it has a fair number of suspension mods. I've done a lot of the work and I would have done more if it weren't for the time.

FIXED! After trying again and again, even changing the pump, this problem is solved! I had some left over sound deadening mat and I wrapped up the pump and the metal part of the high pressure hose in it. I can still hear it, but it is soooo much quieter. Time will tell how long the mat will last, but for now it’s all about hearing my car and it’s exhaust note. Pure bliss! If your pump is hissing, give it a try.
