Default 85 headers fitment

First time 5.0 carbed LX foxbody manual trans car owner. New to this site. I have a stock single exhaust setup . All the smog stuff was trash so I tore it out. Bought a double hump crossmember. Was told that I should switch to 86+ OEM headers to get correct exhaust setup, or should I go aftermarket? Do I keep the heat riser valve? Are offroad x pipes or h pipes better?

Not planning to do upgrades beyond exhaust. Want to keep the car semi quiet.

Heard somewhere that 85s had two types OEM headers.

Can't find older threads discussing this matter. Finding a lot of conflicting info. Still on a learning curve.

if you wish to keep the 85 headers , you'll need to keep the heat riser in place as it has the ball socket end to mate to the h-pipe......you can use an 86-93 h or x pipe, x are more raspy, h = more traditional sound and if it were me I'd get a set of aftermarket 86-93 short headers.....bbk would work fine for you as well as their h-pipe Actually, what I'm referring to on the 85 headers as a heat riser , I meant to say the exhaust cut off flap on the left side headers, the only way to keep the heat riser which is for use with the dual snorkel air cleaner and aids in cold start up is to use the 85 headers.....but in my opinion, you don't really need them as I did away with mine years ago, I just let the car warm up a tad before going.....more so in cold weather
